MONROE — Pot holes, flat tires, damaged shocks and frustrated, jarred drivers: The roads in Monroe have been called “deteriorating” and “dire.”
But some of them are about to get better, if town leaders have their way.
First Selectman Steve Vavrek and Director of Public Works Art Baker hope work starts on some of the town's 141 miles of public roads this summer, after the Town Council unanimously approved on June 14 a contract providing for repairs and maintenance.
The contract will address both the worst and best of Monroe's streets, by fixing the worst — and most expensive — while maintaining the best with “pavement preservation” to ward off more costly repairs in the future, said Baker.
Under its terms, a Florida-based company called Roadway Management will oversee the road work done by subcontractors, providing quality control, field inspections and density testing through a “Progressive Pavement Management Program.”
